Free radicals

Free radicals are molecules that lack an electron and compensate by “stealing” one from other molecules, which in turn become free radicals triggering a chain reaction. Free radicals are by-products of nearly all the metabolic processes involved in the conversion of nutrients into energy. They destroy cells causing a phenomenon known as oxidative stress. Antioxidants can inhibit oxidation, thereby neutralising the effects of free radical activity.
