Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is an endogenous organic substance that gives the skin its natural elasticity and compactness. It can store large quantities of water in proportion to its mass (up to six litres of water per gram). As a major component of connective tissue, hyaluronic acid is found almost everywhere in the body, including the bones, the vitreous body of the eye, the gelatinous nucleus of the intervertebral discs and the synovial fluid that assures joint mobility. As we age, the levels of hyaluronic acid and collagen in the tissue gradually decrease, determining a loss of skin volume and causing the appearance of wrinkles. The latest non-surgical skin rejuvenation techniques include dermal fillers with exogenous hyaluronic acid that, in addition to smoothing out wrinkles and redefining face contours, stimulate the production of endogenous hyaluronic acid and collagen.

Hyaluronic acid is also used for the treatment of arthrosis and other joint disorders.
