Peristalsis

Peristalsis is the alternate contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle tissue controlled by the autonomic nervous system. The wave-like motion of the muscles in organs like the intestine enables the transit of its content. The peristaltic movement is similar to the locomotion mechanism that enables earthworms to move.
