Progesterone is a sex hormone present in both males and females. In females, its function is to regulate the menstrual cycle and prepare the body for pregnancy, hence it is a good indicator of a woman's fertility. Progesterone deficiencies may cause irritability, mood swings, water retention, hypothyroidism, abundant menstruation, depression, migraine, insomnia and hunger spells. In males, progesterone deficiency may cause a wide range of disorders.
