Papillary dermis
The uppermost layer of the dermis is called the papillary dermis because it is connected to the epidermis through finger-shaped protrusions (papillae) whose function is to supply oxygen and nutrients to the epidermis. It consists of a relatively thick layer of connective tissue rich in blood vessels and nerve endings.
