Faecal occult blood

This term refers to the presence of blood in the stool that cannot be detected by naked-eye observation. Occult blood detection is of great diagnostic importance as it can indicate the presence of neoplasms in the intestinal tract. Patients over 45 years of age are especially advised to test for faecal occult blood as part of any colorectal cancer screening programme.
