Cellular damage

Cells can be damaged by mechanical lesions, toxins, hypoxia (lack of oxygen), hypothermia or pathogens.

Severe cellular damage can lead to necrosis, i.e. cell death. In such cases, if the dead cell’s content spills into contiguous areas an inflammatory reaction might be triggered.
