Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)

BIA is a method for the measurement of body composition. The analysis is performed on the basis of the different electrical conductivity of each type of body tissue. Body composition, i.e. the percentages of body muscle and fat, is a more accurate indicator of a person’s state of health than body weight alone. However, regular scales are not equipped to measure such parameters.

BIA is an internationally-recognised method for measuring body weight, muscle mass, fat mass and body water. The values provided also give an indication of other important parameters, such as bone density (indicator of predisposition to osteoporosis), healthy fat vs pathogenic fat ratio, hydration level and concentration of minerals and trace elements in the body. In addition, tissue composition also provides information on basal metabolism, namely the body’s ability to burn oxygen and convert nutrients into energy, and even on stress levels. During the procedure, body composition is represented graphically and clearly displayed. As part of the analysis, a nutritional plan and personalised exercise programme are also devised.

BIA is a precious tool to assess the progress made in the context of long-term fitness counselling.
